Aren’t we are all guilty of spreading around some really bad beauty myths that were passed on to us? In all innocence and with best of intentions, of course! But what makes it even worse is that we have also actually followed some of these ourselves first. It’s about time someone put an end to this! Let’s debunk some of the worst and most dangerous skincare advice, you’ve probably heard before.
1) Sunbathing Clears up Acne
Wrong! At first, tanned skin may look more even-toned and fool you. But as your tan goes away, you will notice it results in hyperpigmented, darker acne scars.
2) Makeup Causes Acne
Not really. Unless you’re falling asleep with your makeup on every night. Best advice would be: Invest on high quality foundation for your skin type, add a gentle but effective cleanser to your skincare routine, plan for a little “me time” every night before you go to bed and you’ll be fine.
3) Facial Exercises Will Prevent Wrinkles
Whether it’s “facercising” or “face yoga” or whatever you want to call it, please stop now! If you’re doing this to restore elasticity and youthfulness to your skin, you’re in for a huge disappointment. Constant movement of facial muscle is actually known to aggravate wrinkles.
4) SPF 80 Means I Don’t Need to Reapply Sunscreen Again
Think again. SPF or sun protection factor is a measure of the sun exposure time it takes for a person to start getting red without sunscreen, which usually is around 10 to 20 minutes. SPF 80 would protect the skin for 80 times longer or 800 minutes. But—and here’s the catch—only if the recommended amount of product is used by reapplying throughout the day.
5) You Can Outgrow Acne
Don’t we all wish this one was true!? Sadly, acne has multiple causes, including stress, food intolerance and hormonal imbalances. This means you could have acne in your 20s, 30s, 40s and so on…
6) Skip Moisturizer to Avoid Acne
This is not a good idea. If you have acne, what you need is a light moisturizer that will not clog your pores and make it worse—but this doesn’t mean you should skip it all together! The right product will create a barrier from pollution and bacteria that will actually protect your skin and aid you in keeping it cleared up.
7) Wash Your Face Multiple Times a Day
Bad idea. Don’t wash your face more than twice a day, even if you have oily skin! The truth is that multiple washes will dry out your skin, causing it to produce even more oil in order to regain its natural balance.
